Youth movement doesn’t hinder staff

By Robert Bember on April 16th, 2008

With an overhauled starting rotation that includes two freshman, a sophomore and a junior, the Horned Frogs have been able to post an improved staff ERA through just over half the season.

After 36 games, the ERA has improved from 3.95 to 3.18. The team’s three regular starters from the 2007 campaign are no longer with the team due to graduation and the draft. Junior Seth Garrison made three starts last season before going down for the year with injury. Though still looking for his first win of the season, Garrison has settled into the rotation with a 3.27 ERA.

Sophomore Tyler Lockwood has led the rotation with a 1.50 ERA and a 3-0 record. Two out of his four starts have been complete games. Last year, Lockwood posted a 4.09 ERA with a 5-2 record in 3 starts. He had 23 appearances out of the bullpen.

Freshmen Sean Hoelscher brings a 3-2 record and 3.13 ERA into the weekend. This week, he earned athlete of the week honors from gofrogs.com after getting his third win of the season Saturday against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Hoelscher took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and set down 16 straight Runnin’ Rebels while accumulating a career-high 8 strikeouts.

Freshman Greg Holle rounds out the rotation. He leads the team with 9 starts and has a 4.20 ERA.

Men’s Baseball Swept by Wichita State, Winning Streak Halted

By David Hall on March 17th, 2008

The Horned Frogs were swept in their weekend series versus the No. 15 Wichita State Shockers, putting an end to their winning ways.

The Horned Frogs’ 5-1 loss on Friday night at Wichita State’s Eck Stadium put an end to their four-game winning streak, which included back-to-back wins over then No. 2 Ole Miss on March 8 and 9, and a sweep of a two-game set against Prairie View A&M on March 10 and 11.

The Horned Frogs lost 3-2 to Wichita State on Saturday despite outhitting the Shockers 8-7. The Horned Frogs also left nine runners on base.

Sunday’s game yielded similar results as the Horned Frogs went down 5-1.

The Horned Frogs currently stand at 9-8 overall.

The team will return home for a four-game stint, beginning with a Tuesday night contest against McNeese State. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.

Horned Frogs Give Their All Against Cal State Fullerton

By David Hall on February 25th, 2008

The men’s baseball team hung tough against the No. 14 Cal State Fullerton Titans this weekend, winning one of three games against the perennial powerhouse, according to gofrogs.com.

The Horned Frogs fell 11-5 in blustery weather conditions Friday night but won their Saturday afternoon matchup 4-2 behind strong pitching from starter Steven Maxwell.

The Frogs fell again on Sunday, 7-4, when Matt Vern’s bid for a game-tying homer fell just short.

The Horned Frogs (1-2) close out their season-opening home stand on Tuesday against Dallas Baptist at Lupton Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.

BYU slugger allowed to return to team

By Robert Bember on February 13th, 2008

A Mountain West Conference player of the year candidate was temporarily kicked off the Brigham Young University baseball team after his LDS Church Bishop said he wasn’t attending church enough.

Junior Kent Walton, one of the team’s leading hitters in 2007, had his ecclesiastical endorsement withdrawn in January. The endorsement from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which sponsors BYU, is required to attend the university and must be renewed every year. He was reinstated to the team on Feb. 7.

“I’m ecstatic about it,” coach Vance Law said. “He’s a fine young man and we’re extremely happy to have him back. It was a long, drawn-out ordeal and we’re very appreciative of all the support from the administration.”

Walton was often absent from church because he was ill, at home or attending church with a friend elsewhere, Kenneth Walton, Kent’s father, said.

Walton led the Cougars in homers, runs, hits, RBIs and slugging percentage in the 2007 season. He’s a potential pick for the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft.

TCU Baseball To Have Big Season

By David Hall on February 11th, 2008

The baseball team will open its season at home against national power Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

The Horned Frogs, who are coming off back-to-back Mountain West Conference titles, have beefed up their non-conference schedule with home games against the likes of Texas A&M and Ole Miss. The team will do a home-and-home against the University of Oklahoma and Baylor.

The future looks bright for the Frogs, who had the second-ranked recruiting class in the state behind the University of Texas, according to Inside Prep Baseball. TCU signed five of the top 25 recruits in the state.

Fans will get to see a showcase of the best talent that the Mountain West Conference offers, as TCU will host the MWC Tournament from May 20-24.

Victory is Sweet with Salter

By Reese Gordon on February 11th, 2008

On Saturday, the Horned Frogs snapped a four-game losing streak, beating the San Diego State Aztecs, 68-62. The team was led in scoring by Henry Salter, who scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 31 minutes. Salter was injured in the opening minute of a 70-58 loss to UNLV on Dec. 30. and he did not play in a Feb. 2 loss to Air Force.

Senior Kevin Langford scored in double-digits for the 20th consecutive game, with 15 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes of action. The team sits at 12-10 overall, with a 4-5 conference mark, equaling their most conference wins since they became a part of the Mountain West. Ryan Wall provided a spark for the Frogs as the senior guard notched 11 points on 3-4 shooting to go along with two assists in 11 minutes of play.

The team’s next game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 against 9-13 Wyoming. The Cowboys are 2-7 in conference play.

Dutch Meyer helped spur

By Andrew Chavez on February 6th, 2008

As a water boy for the University of Texas’ football team, Rooster Andrews contributed four points to UT’s 46-7 win over the Frogs in 1943. Sending in the water boy didn’t sit too well with TCU coach Dutch Meyer. And so begins “the Rooster Andrews legend,” according to his obituary in the Washington Post. Andrews died Jan. 23 in Austin.

Rooster Andrews

Meyer, now a legend in TCU coaching history, challenged UT’s coach, Dana X. Bible, to play Andrews the next week against Texas A&M. Andrews put one extra point through the uprights and had a field goal blocked against the Aggies. He continued to drop kick his way through the ‘44 and ‘45 seasons and after leaving UT eventually got into the sporting goods industry.

There are plenty of stories out there about Andrews, including a profile that ran in the Dallas Morning News in 2001. Not many mention, though, that it all began at TCU.

TCU Athletics to celebrate Women in Sports

By Christina Schams on February 5th, 2008

National Girls and Women in Sports Day will be celebrated tonight at the Women’s Basketball game.

According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, the day is made to highlight the history of women’s participation in sports and the benefits of participating in sports. The day also tries to change the myths about women in athletics, such as the abundance of eating disorders among women athletes.

During halftime, TCU women’s athletic teams will be introduced and women athletes will sign autographs for fans, too. TCU Women’s teams include basketball, equestrian, golf, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, cross country and volleyball.

Tip off against BYU is at 7 p.m. at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

Remember to wear red to help support Women’s Heart Disease Awareness.

Super Bowl a Super Hit

By Reese Gordon on February 4th, 2008

Last night’s 17-14 victory by the New York Giants over the previously undefeated Patriots may go down as the most watched Super Bowl ever.

Until last night, the most watched Super Bowl came in 1996 when the Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 20-10. An estimated 94 million viewers tuned in. The most watched telecast of all time came with the finale of MASH in 1983.

Around TCU, plenty of students used this year’s game as a way to get together with friends and enjoy great food and fun. When it came to commercials, Bud Light seemed to dominate the night’s game-breaks. Local stores around campus were packed with students shopping for goods to make their Super Bowl party one to remember.

This game proved that nothing is certain, in life or sports. There are a lot of Cowboys fans at TCU who were upset with the loss to the Giants, but that feeling has to pale in comparison to what the city of Boston is going through.

All year, everyone has wondered if this year’s Patriots team was the best of all-time. The Giants put an end to this conversation with a dominant defensive effort, continually sacking Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady.

TCU reportedly close to deal with Buckeyes

By Robert Bember on January 30th, 2008

The Horned Frog football team is close to a deal with Ohio State University to open the 2009 football season in Columbus.

Steve Snapp, associate athletic director at Ohio State, said the deal would have the Horned Frogs visiting the Buckeyes on Sept. 5, 2009, after Army backed out of home-and-home series for 2009-2010.

Multiple Ohio publications and television stations reported the story at the end of December. Mark Cohen, athletics media relations director at TCU, said the reports were “far from true.”

“Ohio State is just one of many teams we have had discussions with regarding possible games,” Cohen said.

TCU will travel to face the Oklahoma Sooners on Sept. 27.
