A 2006 survey of NCAA athletes showed that college football players spend 44.8 hours a week devoted to their sport. The finding has college administrators worried as to whether or not players are required to spend such a great deal of time training or if they are choosing to.
“If we’re requiring student-athletes who might not otherwise want to spend that much time on their sport to practice and train that many hours, then we really have a problem,” said Bob Chichester, athletic director at the University of California at Irvine.
The survey showed that football players spend much of their free time training. The NCAA limits mandatory practice time to 20 hours per week, which does not include events such as travel to games. Division I football players reported that they spend 39.5 hours a week on academics, the greatest of any sport.
