Nine out of 32 Texas House Representatives voted yes for bailout

Yesterday’s defeat of the $700 billion bailout plan led to a record drop on Wall Street, and Texas’ representatives are speaking out today about why only nine out of 32 of them voted to approve the bill.

Rep. Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth, who was in the minority who voted yes, told The Star-Telegram she felt like it was her responsibility to try and change the way things were looking in the markets.

“You have to vote your conscience and that’s what I did,” she said. “I didn’t like the bill, but I thought it was better than voting ‘no’.”

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, who voted against the bill, is a member of the Joint Economic Commitee and had recently sat down with Federal Reserve Chairman Bernake to discuss the plan and said he was not at all convinved.

“Like the Iraq war and the Patriot Act, this bill is fueled by fear and hinges on haste,” he said in a press release.

Former Republican presidential candidate, Rep. Ron Paul of Galveston, had been speaking out against the bailout plan since it’s announcement. In an interview with The Washington Post last week, Paul said that this would not be the last bailout, and that the move would further devalue the dollar.

“The real story behind the story in Congree this week was the thousands of calls and e-mails sent to Representatives, clogging up inboxes and even slowing down the House internet system,” he said on his congressional Web site. “Slowly, like the Titanic turning around, sentiments on the Hill shifted.”
